Mectron is equipment that simultaneously sprays fine protein powder and high water pressure to remove bacterial plaque (biofilm) that sticks tenaciously to tooth surfaces. Scaling is treatment that uses ultrasonic waves to remove firmly attached calculus (hard deposits like gum stuck firmly to pavement). In other words, scaling is suitable for removing hard calculus, while Mectron is suitable for removing bacterial plaque from areas difficult to reach with toothbrush or interdental brushes. At our clinic, Mectron care includes basic scaling, plus additional Mectron treatment to thoroughly remove bacteria from areas that are normally difficult to reach.

Scaling uses ultrasonic waves on tooth surfaces, which some find sensitive, whereas Mectron sprays fine powder and water on surfaces, similar to a premium waterpik. Receiving it monthly helps maintain clean gums and is less sensitive or irritating than scaling. It helps with plaque removal even for those who have difficulty brushing or for children, making it good for preventing cavities and gum disease.

While the principles seem similar, their roles differ. A waterpik sprays water at a single point, which has limitations in removing bacterial plaque attached to teeth, though it's effective for removing food particles between teeth. Bacterial plaque is stickier than you might think - just as water spray alone won't remove strawberry jam stuck on a table, Mectron is more effective for such areas. Therefore, a waterpik cannot replace Mectron.

Yes, from young children to the elderly can receive it. Especially for those with mobility issues or difficulty cleaning due to gaps between teeth, receiving regular Mectron care is very helpful for maintaining gum health. Pain is minimal.

If you consistently receive Mectron, it serves as preventive care. However, just as frequent car washing doesn't prevent breakdowns, Mectron alone doesn't resolve all gum diseases. For those whose gums have significantly deteriorated, bacteria exist in deep areas where Mectron can't reach, and leaving them can cause swelling or worsening over time. Therefore, along with Mectron treatment, we periodically check gum condition, and for areas where Mectron has limitations, separate gum treatment may be needed for those specific areas.
